Tapping is a self-therapy process also known as Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. I have used it many times to release unhelpful thoughts and feelings. Tapping is a way to talk yourself into a more relaxed state of mind, while tapping with your fingers on acupuncture points. It sounds kind of mysterious, but it’s actually very simple. And if you’re feeling any kind of resistance to writing, it really helps. I decided to do a freewrite about this so I could demonstrate freewriting and tapping at the same time.
What follows is a transcription of what I wrote in two 5-minute freewriting sessions. I inserted where you would be tapping on the points after the freewrite. The movement from point to point is intuitive. You’ll notice as I work through the points the resistance starts to lift and I feel more positive. That’s the purpose of tapping, to identify where and how you feel stuck and to get unstuck. Raising your self awareness though tapping releases the stuck energy.
If you’ve never seen tapping (there are hundreds of videos on Youtube), here’s how you do it. Just use the fingertips of your second, third, and fourth fingers to tap lightly on the point locations while saying how you feel out loud. The locations are listed in the section headings. Every tapping session begins with three setup statements that affirm your positive self regard while dealing with any situation.
I want to write about tapping because how it applies to writing could be useful for me and others. I need to write a script and explain how it works so I can write a blog post about it. How would it start?
Setup statements (3) – Side of the hand
Even though I’m resisting writing I still appreciate and respect myself.
Even though I hate that sometimes writing feels really hard to me, I still appreciate and respect myself.
Even though writing feels hard sometimes and I resist doing it because I have to collect my thoughts, I still appreciate and respect myself.
Top of the eyebrow
I hate this resistance I have to writing. I actually love writing but it takes a lot of effort to think in a sustained way to compose meaningful writing.
Side of the eye
So I distract myself with other things like eating and shopping and watching videos that suck up my time and energy.
Below the eye
Writing consumes a lot of mental energy so if I wait it gets harder throughout the day. I must write something every morning (first 5-minute timer goes off)
Below the nose
So what can I do to free myself from distractions and FOCUS? Focus is everything.
On the chin
Should I write by hand or should I just write on the computer? I can write anything if I just focus.
Below the collarbone
If I just START I can write for at least a page. A page at a time feels good. I could take a break after a page.
Under the arm
It might interrupt my flow, but I can always continue so it shouldn’t be a problem. I receive the words I need as I write.
Top of the head (tap in affirmations after releasing)
I’m writing easily and creatively. I trust my mind to receive the flow as I’m writing. I have the habit of writing at will and all is well.
(second 5-minute timer goes off)
End of freewrite
I often feel that tapping is a bit like praying. By the end of the session I feel so much better, I want to say Thank You God and So It Is! On the day I wrote this I’d been resisting writing for hours, and then I wrote two pages in ten minutes. Hallelujah! 🙂
While writing the script, I imagined I was doing the tapping. Afterward, I read it through with the tapping and cleaned it up a little to fit the sequence better. So that’s one way you can do tapping if you don’t know what to say, write it out first and then turn it into a script. After you do it a few times, the words will come to you naturally. It’s great to know that EFT can remove resistance to writing, and it’s easy to do. I’ll be creating more tapping scripts for solving issues that come up, so please check back and give them a try.
